What R-Value Should a Garage Door Have in Calgary?

what r value your garage door has

There is no single garage-door R-value that is right for every Calgary home. For an attached garage, a heated garage or a space with a room beside or above it, choose an insulated door and compare the performance of the complete door, including its U-factor, joints, windows and weather seals. For a detached, unheated garage, durability and good sealing may matter more than buying the highest advertised R-value.

The number on a brochure is useful, but it does not describe every path that heat and air can take through a garage-door opening. Calgary homeowners will make a better choice by matching the door to how the garage is built and used.

R-value and U-factor are not the same measurement

R-value measures resistance to heat flow. A higher number indicates more resistance in the part being measured. For garage doors, the advertised R-value may be calculated at the centre of an insulated section. It may not include section joints, perimeter seals, windows and other parts of the complete door.

U-factor measures heat transfer through an assembly. A lower U-factor indicates better insulating performance. The Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association explains that garage-door R-value and U-factor should not be treated as simple reciprocals because they can describe different test areas and conditions.

Measurement What it tells you What to ask the seller
R-value Resistance to heat flow in the stated material or door section Is this a centre-of-section value or a whole-door result?
U-factor Heat transfer through the tested door assembly Does the test include the complete installed door and its components?
Air infiltration How much air can pass through gaps under test conditions What perimeter and bottom seals are included?

What should you choose for your Calgary garage?

Start with the garage’s use and its connection to the house. Then compare products within the category that fits.

Garage type What to prioritize Why it matters
Detached and unheated Reliable construction, wind resistance and properly fitted seals The garage may not benefit enough from the highest insulation package to justify the added cost
Attached but unheated An insulated steel door with well-fitted seals and solid overall construction The garage shares walls or a ceiling with conditioned parts of the home
Heated workshop or frequently used space Lower U-factor, insulated sections, thermal breaks where offered and tight seals Heat loss and cold drafts affect comfort and operating cost
Room beside or above the garage The complete opening, plus the garage walls, ceiling and house entry door The garage door is only one part of the boundary around the living space

For many Calgary homes with an attached garage, the sensible starting point is an insulated steel door with well-fitted perimeter seals. From there, compare lower whole-door U-factor, door construction, window design and price. If only an R-value is shown, ask what part of the door was measured.

Why the weather seals can matter as much as the panel

A well-insulated section will not stop a draft under the door. Air can enter around an uneven bottom seal, worn side or top weatherstrip, section joints, damaged corners and window frames.

When comparing or inspecting a door, look for:

  • A bottom seal that touches the floor across the full width
  • Side and top weatherstrip that meets the door without large gaps
  • Section joints that close evenly when the door is down
  • Daylight visible at the bottom corners
  • Cracked, stiff or missing seal material
  • An uneven slab that prevents the bottom seal from sitting flat

Weather seals are wear items. A door can have a good insulation package and still feel cold near the opening if the seals have hardened, shifted or pulled away. Our garage door maintenance service includes checks that can identify sealing and movement problems before they become larger repairs.

Polyurethane or polystyrene insulation?

Both materials are used in insulated garage doors, but the construction is different.

Polystyrene is commonly fitted as rigid board between door skins or behind the exterior skin. It can be a practical choice when moderate insulation and a lower product cost are the priorities.

Polyurethane is typically foamed into the section and bonds to the steel skins. This construction can provide more insulation within a given thickness and can make the section feel more solid. Product details still vary, so compare the tested performance and construction of the exact models in your estimate.

The insulation material should not be the only deciding factor. Steel thickness, section design, reinforcement, hardware, glass and weather seals all affect the final door.

Do garage-door windows reduce insulation?

Windows create a different thermal path from the insulated panel around them. The effect depends on the amount of glass, the glazing and the window frame. If warmth is a priority, compare insulated glazing options and avoid choosing a large window layout without checking its effect on the complete door’s performance.

Windows can still be a worthwhile choice when daylight and exterior style matter. The goal is to understand the tradeoff before ordering the door.

Can you add insulation to an existing garage door?

Insulation kits can improve an uninsulated door, but added material changes the door’s weight. The spring system is selected to balance a specific door weight. If the door becomes heavier, it may be difficult to lift, may not stay in place when disconnected from the opener and may place extra load on the opener.

Before adding insulation, check the door’s construction, condition, balance and spring capacity. Never adjust or replace torsion springs, extension springs, lift cables or bottom brackets without the correct training and tools.

What should be listed in an installation quote?

  • The exact manufacturer, model and door size
  • The stated R-value and whether a whole-door U-factor is available
  • The insulation material and section thickness
  • The exterior and interior steel construction
  • Any thermal-break feature offered by the manufacturer
  • The window type and glazing, if windows are included
  • Bottom, side and top weather seals
  • Spring, track and opener compatibility
  • Removal, installation, disposal and applicable warranties

A useful quote lets you compare complete doors instead of comparing one large number on two brochures.
