Lift cables work as a matched system

Why Garage Door Cables Come Off or Break

Lift cables transfer spring force to the bottom of the door. They must stay seated in the drum grooves and carry the door evenly on both sides. A cable can fray from wear, lose tension after a spring failure, jump a drum when the door binds or become damaged near a bottom bracket.

Replacing a visible cable without checking the reason it failed can leave the door crooked again. We inspect cable routing, drum alignment, garage door spring system, rollers, tracks and bottom fixtures before testing the repaired door through its full travel.

  • Frayed or snapped lift cables
  • Cable off the drum or crossed in a groove
  • One side rising ahead of the other
  • Slack cable after spring or track trouble
  • Worn drums, bottom brackets and related hardware

An uneven door can shift without warning

When Should You Stop Using the Door?

Stop immediately if the door is tilted, one cable is slack, a cable is hanging beside the track or the bottom corner has lifted unevenly. Do not pull the emergency release while standing beneath a raised, unbalanced door. The opener rail is not intended to hold a door whose lifting system has failed.

Keep the opening clear and do not touch the bottom brackets. Those brackets can remain connected to tensioned cables even when another part of the system looks loose. If you are unsure which lifting part failed, request a garage door repair service.

Cable off the drum

A cable outside its grooves can overlap, bind and change how one side lifts.

Door out of level

A height difference between bottom corners points to uneven cable tension or binding.

Repair the lifting path as a whole

What We Check During Cable Repair

The cable is inspected from its bottom attachment to the drum or pulley, together with the parts that keep it under controlled tension.

Cable Condition

Look for broken strands, crushing, corrosion and wear near attachment points.

Drum Grooves

Confirm the cable sits cleanly and winds without crossing or stacking.

Spring Balance

Check whether the spring system is producing even, suitable lift.

Bottom Brackets

Inspect the high-tension connection at each lower corner of the door.

Tracks and Rollers

Find binding or impact damage that may have thrown the cable out of position.

Shaft Alignment

Verify drums and supporting bearings remain secure and correctly positioned.

Controlled from both sides

STEP 4

Synchronize

Set both sides evenly, cycle the door and confirm stable tracking and balance.

The second cable matters too

Should Garage Door Cables Be Replaced in Pairs?

Both lift cables work on the same door and usually see the same number of cycles, but they may not have identical wear. If one cable is frayed from age, the cable on the other side deserves close inspection. If one was damaged by a local bracket or drum problem, the repair may be different.

We compare cable condition, diameter, routing and attachment on both sides. The recommendation is based on what failed and whether the remaining components can carry the door evenly.

  • Age-related fraying may affect both sides.
  • A single drum problem can damage only one cable.
  • Spring imbalance can create uneven cable loading.
  • A bent track or seized roller can pull one side out of sequence.

Cable price is only one part of the repair

What Affects Cable Repair Cost?

The quote depends on cable type and length, drum and bracket condition, door position, spring balance, track alignment and whether secondary damage occurred when the cable came loose. A door jammed partway open may require additional securing and setup before repairs begin. Routine garage door maintenance service can also identify cable wear and changing balance before the cable leaves the drum.

  • Cable type, diameter and length
  • One cable or a matched pair
  • Door position and safe access
  • Drum, shaft and bracket condition
  • Track, roller or spring problems that caused the failure

Help Us Prepare

Photograph both bottom corners and the drum area only from a safe standing position. Do not reach past a loose cable or stand beneath a raised door.

Cable Systems Behind Different Door Sizes

Wide and two-door garages place different demands on cable length, drum travel and alignment. These original project photos show why the complete door configuration must be considered before cable parts are chosen.

Cable Repair Questions

Is a garage door cable under tension?

Yes. Lift cables connect to the counterbalance system and can remain under significant tension. Do not loosen bottom brackets, drums or cable attachments. Keep clear of a hanging or frayed cable.

It can contribute to uneven loading, slack cable and poor drum tracking. A cable repair should include a check of the spring system, not only the visible cable.

No. Continuing to run the opener can pull against an uneven door and increase damage. Stop using it and have the cables, drums, tracks and rollers inspected.

Yes. Binding, uneven spring tension, impact or moving the door while it is out of level can let a cable lose its groove. The cause must be corrected before the cable is reset.

From floor level, send the full inside of the door, both bottom corners and the cable drum area above the door. Do not climb, touch the cable or move a crooked door for a better photo.
