The spring carries the load
A garage door spring is part of the counterbalance system. It stores energy so the door can move with controlled effort instead of making the opener lift the full door weight. When a spring breaks or loses the correct torque, the door may become too heavy, rise unevenly or stop after a few inches.
We identify the spring system, inspect the shaft, drums, cables, bearings and attachment points, then determine the correct replacement for the door. That wider inspection matters because a garage door cable failure or worn bearing can produce symptoms that look like a spring failure. If the cause is not yet clear, start with our garage door repair service.
Know when to leave the door closed
Stop using the door and keep people away if a spring has separated, a cable is loose or the door is hanging unevenly. A spring system is under stored tension even when the door is not moving. Do not loosen set screws, remove bottom brackets or attempt to wind a spring without the correct training and equipment.
If the door is closed, leave it closed until it can be assessed. If it is open or partly open, do not stand beneath it. Tell us whether the door is open, closed or partly open when you call.
A separated torsion coil above the door is a common sign of a break.
A door that was easy to move and is now very heavy may have lost counterbalance.
A diagnosis before parts are ordered
The spring must suit the door, not simply resemble the part that came off. These checks shape the repair recommendation.
Panel construction, insulation, windows and reinforcement all affect the load.
Height changes cable travel and the spring characteristics required for full movement.
Torsion and extension systems use different hardware and service procedures.
We confirm the number of springs, shaft arrangement and available mounting space.
Bearings, drums, cables and brackets are checked before the new spring is tensioned.
The completed door should hold and move correctly before the opener is reconnected.
A controlled four-step service
STEP 1
Identify the spring failure and inspect the connected counterbalance hardware.
STEP 2
Select the spring specification for the door’s weight, height and configuration.
STEP 3
Secure the door, replace the spring and set the required tension safely.
STEP 4
Cycle the door by hand, reconnect the opener and complete the final movement check.
Two springs may share the same working life
On a two-spring torsion system, both springs usually complete the same number of cycles. If one has failed from age and the other is the same specification and installation date, replacing the pair can reduce the chance of a second service interruption soon afterward.
It is not a rule for every door. The correct decision depends on the remaining spring, the door configuration and whether the existing pair was properly matched. We explain the condition we see and quote the applicable options instead of treating every system the same.
Pricing depends on the door and hardware
Door size and weight, spring type, spring count, shaft and bearing condition, access above the opening and related cable or bracket damage can all change the work. A photo of the spring area and a full photo of the door help us prepare. The correct spring is confirmed from the door specifications and existing hardware. For balance and hardware checks before a failure, see our garage door maintenance service.
Send one clear photo above the closed door and one photo of the full door from inside. Do not climb or move the door to take a better picture.

Clear answers before service
No. The opener should move a properly balanced door, not replace the counterbalance system. Continuing to run an unbalanced door can strain opener components and make movement less predictable.
When counterbalance tension is lost, the cables may no longer remain properly loaded on the drums. The cables and drums should be inspected before the door is moved or a new spring is tensioned.
There is no single calendar life for every spring. Cycle rating, daily use, door balance, corrosion, hardware condition and whether the spring was correctly matched all affect service life.
Torsion springs turn on a shaft above the door. Extension springs stretch along the horizontal tracks. They use different supporting hardware and service procedures, so the existing system must be identified before parts are selected.
Tell us whether the door is open, closed or partly open. From a safe position, send one photo of the full door and one of the spring area above or beside it. Do not climb or move the door to take a photo.
Leave a broken spring to trained hands
Tell us whether the door is open or closed and send a clear photo of the spring area. We will use those details to prepare for the service call.
